Readers will want to read the books that precede this title in the Vietnam series since doing so will help them understand the characters better. Each is trying to not only dal with Rudi's death, but his own thoughts and fears of returning home and facing each other and family. And one of them will decide it's up to him to single-handedly win the war. Each is left to deal with their secret in his own way. One of them will defy orders in an act of protest.
It balanced action with character development and gave a pretty clear picture of how the war damaged people differently. I really enjoyed the book because it was interesting and it gets more and more intense. And their shattered friendship will prove either their salvation. They pledged to come home together. In the end, Vietnam may claim more than their lives. What can I expect if I attend? I shared this with my son once I was done reading it and he enjoyed it as much as I did.
The novel is narrated in the first person by all four of the friends in alternating chapters, so we get the full effect of their reaction to Rudi's death and to the war in general. I remember feeling the same way about the first Chris Lynch book I read, The Right Fight. This is the fifth book in the series, and it is the first one I have read. I did read the ending through tons of tears but I totally missed it. Really, I could make this review just that single word.
Told from multiple view points, this story covers Morris' grief at Rudi's death, Ivan's continued fighting in Vietnam, Beck's sentiments, and even s few snippets of Rudi's perspective. If you're looking for a novel that is profoundly revelatory and comes with a huge punch of impact about something vitally important, this is it. How can I know that what I share will be safe? In Walking Wounded, four best friends are in the Vietnam War, when one of them gets killed, by what seems to be friendly fire. Strengths: Very good descriptions of what it was like to be fighting in Vietnam. As the war grinds on, their very souls are at stake. Mark Jones walks the reader through the process of identifying wound behavior patterns and instructs on how to remove destructive patterns and replace them with the right, productive ones.
But still, rates of homelessness, substance abuse and more are still orders of magnitude higher among veterans and this tells us that there is still a long way to go.
